TREZIMBE PROJECT TITLE

_DSC1071Twezimbe Project was born out of seeing the need of the many woman that were widowed, living with HIV or simply living in poverty. In keeping with all the Beyond Uganda is called to do, we do not want to fix immediate needs but perpetuating the dependency on others that keeps these women locked in poverty, but we want to partner with the local women to empower them and create opportunities for them to help themselves out of poverty. It was these women themselves that came up with the name of the project, Twezimbe.
This is a word in the local language of Lugandan meaning  let’s build, empower, and emancipate ourselves in all aspects of life – economical, spiritual, and social. The Twezimbe Project does just that, it creates a “community” among the people it serves and allows them the encourage one another as they gain the skills, knowledge and opportunities to better their families through a variety of ways.

MC LOANS TITLE

A woman can apply for a micro credit loan for $50 USD for a New Loan and once approved, Beyond Uganda provides that loan with guidance through mentoring 3 days a week in business, finances, life skills and more. These loans are interest free and the recipient comes each Friday to repay a portion of the loan which is to be repaid in full within 6 months. What makes this Micro Credit Loan Program so unique is that at the end of the repayment that woman sits down with the staff and helps pick the next woman to invest her money into to give them a helping hand in business. It is a powerful way that these women are creating a community of entrepreneurship.

Beyond Uganda started with 4 women receiving new loans and we are currently at over 170 women with 100% repayment history!!!! That is incredible in any country. And recently the women that have built successful businesses and repaid their loans requested Expansion Loans to further their businesses. For a mere $100 USD a woman with an already existing loan can expand her business and in some cases, even create jobs for others. There are many more women on the waiting list than money that is available so consider investing in one of the women on our waiting list below. As you have read, your money does not end with her but continues to give and give to other women in the community, transforming not only their lives but the lives of their children and families.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP TITLE

Grace Savings Association was a branch off group from the women’s Twezimbe Micro Credit Loans. In Uganda, women do not handle money (nor do they make much of it) but women, as a whole, do not have bank accounts, save money or even understand finances because no one has ever taught or trusted them to do so. The women that were successful in the Micro Credit Loan Program found themselves with money that they did not know how to handle and were uncomfortable keeping it in their homes and putting themselves at risk of theft. So out of necessity the Grace Savings Association was started with a group of our most successful and trusted women. To be part of the association you must be voted in and attend meetings. At each meeting the member women bring a portion of money and put it in the security lock box that is kept in the safe at our office. Each deposit is recorded to keep accurate records of who has invested a certain amount. They collectively pool their money together to accumulate larger sums of money and then vote who will get the first pay out to use for something big that they could not have afforded otherwise. Some have used their payout loan to purchase land, to build a home and thereby free themselves from paying rent, purchased livestock for sustainable food source or like one of our women purchase a boda boda (motorcycle) for quicker & easier transport of her tomatoes to markets/villages farther into the jungle!  This is truly a project that had brought together the women to further themselves and take responsibility for their success and future.
