FAQ

The following are frequently asked questions about Beyond Uganda, what we do, how we serve, why we exist, and more.

ABOUT BEYOND UGANDA
IS BEYOND UGANDA A REGISTERED NON-PROFIT?

Yes, Beyond Uganda is a nationally and internationally recognized non-profit. We are a registered 501 (c) (3) nonprofit in the United States as well as a registered NGO in Uganda.

WHAT IS BEYOND UGANDA

Beyond Uganda is an international organization based in Paducah, Kentucky, with primary operations in Uganda, Africa. We care primarily for children and women living in extreme poverty and believe that devastation of poverty and limited access to resources and opportunities are huge barriers to reaching people with the Love of God. By meeting needs such as medical, nutrition, and education, we believe these women and children can overcome poverty and serve as change agents in their own communities.

WHEN WAS BEYOND UGANDA FOUNDED?

In 2011, the Gurrola family joined others from their church on a short-term mission trip to visit their sponsored child in Uganda. While there, they were exposed to the reality of extreme poverty and the many children who were not eligible or able to receive help. One of their daughters, on that trip, commented, “We can’t unsee what we have seen, and we need to go home and do something beyond Uganda”. Out of a simple statement, a vision was born, and that vision, coupled with passion, birthed the organization.

WHERE DOES BEYOND UGANDA OPERATE?

We primarily operate in our four project sites in the communities of Bugiri, Namayemba, Makerere, and Wakiso. However, we often assist in other communities with partner ministries for special projects, and we, of course, look for opportunities to serve at home in our country and communities

WHAT WORK DOES BEYOND UGANDA DO?

We work primarily serving women and children living in extreme poverty to give them resources and opportunities to overcome the obstacles that keep them in poverty. This is done through creating programs and opportunities to be empowered to stand on their own. Therefore, our focus is on educating children and empowering women, but we also dig wells, build homes, and address the immediate critical needs of nutrition and medical care.

WHY DO YOU DO MORE THAN CHILD SPONSORSHIP?

Our organization was founded out of simply wanting to provide shoes for a child, but as we grew and learned the culture in which God called us to, we found that poverty was much more deeply rooted. A Brookings Institution Research Report tracked children born into generational poverty in any country around the world, including Uganda, and found a common outcome. This was that there was a need to address 4 specific things for individuals to have an opportunity to reach the middle class before middle age:
1- Safe and Affordable Housing
2- Quality Educational Opportunities
3- Access to Health and Wellness
4- Livable wage Earning Opportunity after High School
If all 4 are addressed, 93% probability that the individual will break generational poverty and be middle class by middle age.
But, missing just 1 of the 4, 87% chance they live in poverty their entire life. Because of this research, Beyond Uganda changed our model to going deeper in fewer families to address all 4 of these pillars of change instead of giving less to many.

WHAT ARE PILLAR PROJECTS?

As we dive into the deeper care of those we serve by addressing the 4 pillars to break generational poverty, we tackle such projects as CLEAN WATER WELLS, HOUSING PROJECTS, HIGHER EDUCATION or VOCATIONAL TRAINING, MEDICAL / NUTRITION OUTREACHES.

CHILD SPONSORSHIP

How our sponsorship program works to meet the needs of the children we care for.

HOW DOES SPONSORSHIP WORK?

Unlike large sponsorship organizations that rely on grants, federal funding, or major corporate donations, Beyond Uganda is a small nonprofit that depends on individual sponsors and church partners to meet both the immediate and long-term needs of the children we serve. To ensure sustainable, holistic care, each child has up to eight shared sponsorship opportunities that together provide full support.

When all sponsorships are filled, a child is considered fully funded, meaning their daily needs—such as education, food, medical care, and discipleship—are met while also intentionally planning for their future development and stability. While this shared sponsorship model is less common, it is used by other small and mid-sized child-focused organizations and has proven to be both effective and deeply relational.

This approach allows multiple sponsors to invest together in the life of one child, often resulting in shared prayer, coordinated gifts, and greater collective impact. It also provides critical continuity of care; if one sponsor is unable to continue, the child does not lose educational or program support but remains fully cared for through the ongoing partnership of other sponsors.

WHAT HAPPENS IF A CHILD ISN'T FULLY FUNDED?

Beyond Uganda uses a pooled funding model to ensure consistent care and services for all registered children at each project site. Under this model, individual sponsorship contributions are combined into a centralized fund and distributed monthly to the specific project site where the child is enrolled.

This approach allows every child at the site to receive essential care—such as education support, nutrition, medical care, and discipleship—regardless of whether their individual sponsorship is fully filled at a given time. It ensures stability and continuity of care across the entire program.

Children who are fully sponsored receive priority consideration for additional opportunities, including educational excursions, higher education pathways, and participation in specialized Pillar Projects (see Pillar Projects section above). This balanced model protects vulnerable children while honoring the commitment of sponsors and encouraging long-term investment in each child’s future.

CAN I COMMUNICATE WITH MY SPONSOR CHILD?

Absolutely. Beyond Uganda encourages sponsors to build a meaningful and appropriate relationship with their sponsored child. Many of the children we serve come from broken and often traumatic backgrounds and may have never experienced consistent encouragement, affirmation, or loving support.

We have seen time and again that simple words of kindness, prayer, and encouragement can profoundly impact a child, transforming fear and hopelessness into confidence, hope, and the ability to dream about their future.

DOES A CHILD HAVE TO BE A CHRISTIAN TO BE IN THE PROGRAM?

No. Children are welcome to participate in Beyond Uganda programs regardless of their faith or religious background. While Beyond Uganda is unapologetically Christian, and many of our programs are operated in partnership with local churches and faith-based leaders, participation is never conditional upon a child or family’s beliefs.

Every child is given the opportunity to experience Jesus’ love through compassionate care, hear the message of the Gospel, and receive discipleship through age-appropriate activities and relationships. However, neither children nor their families are ever pressured or required to become Christians to receive services or support.

DONATIONS AND STEWARDSHIP

CAN I TRUST BEYOND UGANDA WITH MY DONATION?

As a faith-based organization, Beyond Uganda is committed to being faithful stewards of the resources God has entrusted to us. We take this responsibility seriously and are dedicated to using every gift with wisdom, integrity, and transparency. To ensure this, we regularly conduct internal reviews and financial oversight both in the United States and within our project communities in Uganda.

All financial processes are carefully monitored to ensure that funds are properly received, documented, and used for their intended purposes. In addition, we consistently evaluate our programs and project sites to confirm they are creating meaningful, measurable impact in the lives of the children, families, and communities we serve.

Our ultimate goal is that the children and individuals in our programs come to know and follow Jesus Christ, gain the skills and confidence to support themselves, serve others with compassion, become responsible members of their communities, and grow in physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being as they transition into independent adulthood.

WHAT IS A POOLED FUNDS MODEL?

Beyond Uganda is committed to providing consistent, high-quality care to every child enrolled in our programs. To accomplish this, we use a pooled funding model, in which sponsorship contributions are combined into a centralized fund and distributed monthly to each project site.

After essential operational and program costs are covered, funds are allocated to ensure that all sponsored children continue to receive care, even if individual sponsorship payments are delayed or temporarily missed. This model allows Beyond Uganda to steward resources responsibly, maintain program stability, and remain compliant with U.S. nonprofit financial regulations.

By pooling funds, we are able to minimize administrative overhead and ensure that resources are directed toward direct care and impact. This approach helps protect children from interruptions in services and allows our local teams to provide reliable, holistic support to every child entrusted to our care.

DO YOU GIVE MONEY DIRECTLY TO CHILDREN OR FAMILIES?

No. Beyond Uganda does not provide cash directly to children or families. Instead, we partner with trusted local leaders and project teams to ensure support is delivered in a responsible, accountable, and sustainable way.

Rather than distributing direct financial assistance, which can unintentionally create dependency or reduce accountability, resources are managed at the project level to meet a child’s most critical needs. Local leaders and church partners understand their communities deeply and are best positioned to assess needs, provide oversight, and ensure funds are used effectively.

Through this model, Beyond Uganda ensures support contributes to a child’s long-term growth and stability, helping equip them with the care, education, and guidance needed to break cycles of poverty.

ARE DESIGNATED FUNDS ALSO POOLED?

No. Beyond Uganda only pools child sponsorship funds, as they are intended to support multiple children and shared program needs at each project site.

When donors give to a designated project, those funds are restricted and used solely for the specific purpose for which they were given. Beyond Uganda maintains clear financial tracking and accountability for all designated gifts and provides donors with updates on outcomes and impact. If circumstances ever require a use change, donors are informed, and approval is sought whenever appropriate.

SPONSORSHIP ENGAGEMENT

Learn how to stay connected with your sponsor child and get joy out of your impact in their lives.

HOW DO I WRITE TO MY SPONSOR CHILD?

You are welcome and encouraged to write to your sponsored child as often as you would like. Letters may be sent in several ways to ensure they reach your child quickly and meaningfully.

You may write a physical letter and deliver or mail it to Beyond Uganda’s home office at 1400 Husband Road, Paducah, KY 42003. Each letter is scanned and emailed to the project site so your child receives it as quickly as possible. The original letter is also sent, as many children deeply treasure and keep their sponsor letters for years.

You may also email a letter or photo directly to our email or use our online submission option. Letters and photos received electronically are printed, shared with your child, and translated if needed by the local project leader.

Your words of encouragement and care play a powerful role in your child’s life, and we are grateful for the relationship you are building.

WILL I RECEIVE LETTERS FROM MY SPONSOR CHILD?

Yes. Sponsors can expect to receive letters and updates from their sponsored child as part of the relationship built through the program. Children are encouraged to write letters and share updates at designated times throughout the year, often with the guidance and support of local project leaders.

While the timing and frequency of letters may vary due to school schedules, translations, and local circumstances, Beyond Uganda works diligently to facilitate this communication and ensure letters are shared in a safe, appropriate, and meaningful way. All correspondence is reviewed and translated as needed before being sent to sponsors.

These letters provide a valuable glimpse into your child’s life and growth and are an important part of fostering encouragement, connection, and mutual care between sponsors and children.

CAN I SEND GIFTS TO MY CHILD?

Yes, you may send a gift to your sponsored child, and we appreciate the love and thought behind every gesture. When choosing a gift, we kindly ask sponsors to keep in mind the cost of international shipping and the difference in economic context between Uganda and other countries.

We encourage simple, personal gifts such as stickers, drawings, photos, and pictures that can be placed inside a letter. These items are easy to ship, deeply meaningful to children, and often treasured for years.

For safety and equity reasons, gifts should be small (no larger than a shoebox) and not expensive. Larger or costly items can unintentionally place a child at risk of theft, harm, or unwanted attention. If a gift does not fit within a standard envelope, we respectfully request that sponsors include a donation to help cover shipping costs, as international shipping expenses can be significant and may otherwise divert funds from essential programs.

These guidelines help ensure gifts are safe, appropriate, and a blessing to your child while protecting the dignity and well-being of all children in our programs.

HOW MUCH CAN I GIFT MY CHILD BEYOND MY SPONSORSHIP?

To help ensure gifts are safe, appropriate, and equitable, Beyond Uganda has established the following recommended gifting guidelines:

  • For birthday and/or Christmas gifts, we suggest no more than $25 per occasion, with a maximum of $50 per year per child.

  • If a sponsor wishes to give a family gift, we recommend no more than $300 per year.

  • Sponsors may also give toward a Project Gift that benefits not only their sponsored child but also other children at the same project site. Examples include play equipment, group birthday celebrations, classroom or office needs, and kitchen equipment. We suggest Project Gifts not exceed $1,500 annually.

In some cases, children or families may have larger, one-time needs, such as housing assistance, a family business startup, or other approved initiatives. These opportunities are addressed through designated projects, and sponsors are encouraged to contact the Beyond Uganda office directly to discuss options and receive guidance.

These guidelines help protect children, promote fairness, and ensure that generosity leads to lasting, positive impact.
